Include Gift Giving in Your Holiday Calendar

Dec 4, 2023 | Uncategorized

The holiday season is in full swing in the Ottawa area. We are so grateful to be a part of this community and the kindness of community members. During our years in business as property managers of short and long term rentals through Flex Property Management we are grateful to our friends, families, and clients for supporting local and national outreach programs and charities.

As we organize our time and resources, including calendars to complete tasks before the holidays (check out last week’s blog), home décor, and gift shopping, we want to reflect on the incredible gifts of giving. In the past, Short and Suite Airbnb was influenced by our family’s traditions of giving to school children in need of back packs and school supplies. My Mom would gather up supplies throughout the summer and hold them in our garage until just before school and drop them off to families in need. She would also buy snowsuits at the end of the season on sale and gift them to children in her school where she taught kindergarten for many years. My Dad owned a toy shoppe and donated many toys through a program he created with the local bus transportation system and stuff a city bus with toys donated from his shoppe and community members to be donated to the Salvation Army Toy Drive. My sister would load the bus in freezing rain, rain, and snow. It was a family activity we have embraced over the years. These acts of kindness were planned every year and brought the greatest gifts to our family – a sense of community and belonging with great joy!

This year with our family’s and community’s encouragement we will be creating and encouraging others to donate to the Shoebox Project. The Shoebox Project supports local women impacted by or at risk of homelessness. The shoebox provides women in need with essentials such as, 10-dollar gift cards to a grocery or drug store, deodorant, body wash, hair care products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, candy/chocolate (nut free please). Add a little luxury to the shoe box. You may want to consider cosmetics, hand warmers, mitts, hats, scarves, skin care items and lip balm. These items are packed into a shoebox with a simple, kind message to let the recipient know you care. Wrap the top of the box for that festive vibe.

We believe in the vision of The Shoebox Project’s Project – “to foster equitable communities where all women are seen, valued, and treated with dignity and compassion”. Check out the website for other ways to contribute to building connections and community through the Shoebox Project. You can drop off your gift at the following locations before December 13, 2023.
